What is a Rheumatologist?

A Rheumatologist is a specialist who is extensively trained in the care of patients with arthritis and related diseases.

A Rheumatologist is specially trained to spot clues in your medical history and physical examination that allow for early diagnosis and treatment.

Because a Rheumatologist's exam is different from that given by your family physician, a complete history and physical examination are usually required at the patient's initial visit. Also, the Rheumatologist may need to order a series of blood tests and x-rays.

Who needs a Rheumatologist?

The majority of patients who see a Rheumatologist are those with various arthritic disorders. There are over 100 different forms of arthritis affecting both young and old.

These diseases can manifest themselves as joint and spine pain either from inflammation or mechanical wear. Besides joint symptoms, some of the serious diseases can affect the lungs, heart, muscles, eyes, nerves, etc.
